A Quick
Introduction into Reflexology
The Chinese classic, the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal
Medicine, which was written around 1,000 BC, has a chapter on "Examining
Foot Method" and is the beginning of discussions in print about the
connection of life force and points and areas on the feet.
Reflexology is the application of focused pressure to
specific points and areas on the feet or hands. It is based on the theory that
there are zones and reflex points that correspond to and relate to all organs,
glands and body parts in the entire body. Reflexologists believe that
pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person's
health
Reflexologists
use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas. Practitioners
of reflexology include chiropractors, physical therapists and massage
therapists, among others.
Various studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of
Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms,
such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also
show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with
cancer.
Reflexologists
claim that reflexology also can treat a wide variety of medical conditions,
such as asthma, diabetes and cancer. Millions of people use reflexology to
complement other treatments when dealing with various different conditions.
